At OMSI, until February 17, there is a magnificent exhibit called Exquisite Creatures by Christopher Marley. I’ve seen it four times now, and each visit fills me with a deeper awe and wonder of the magnificently creative God we have.

Marley explores the relationship between art, nature and science. the exhibit features preserved animals, plants and minerals arranged in geometric , artistic displays.

In his book Exquisite Creatures, Marley reflects on the repeated reports from visitors to the exhibit—experiences he couldn’t easily explain. He writes, “Reports of severely autistic children being unusually expressive, notes from people who described life-changing experiences, comments about clouds of depression parting for the first time in weeks or months, and reports of people being brought to tears—these were posted or received almost daily.”

Marley began to wonder what could explain’ the strong feelings of joy, renewal, meaning, and connection’ that many visitors experienced. He believes part of the answer lies in our constant exposure to technology, which often distances us from the physical world, our creativity, our values and our connections to one another.

Nature’s healing power is well-documented in numerous studies, which provide scientific evidence of its benefits: reduced stress and anxiety, enhanced cognitive function, improved physical health, better sleep quality, a stronger immune system and increased social and spiritual well-being.

This exhibit definitely encourages me to spend more time in nature and reap its benefits. But I was moved even deeper than just the practical advantages. The following excerpts from Chris Tiegren’s message, The Ministry of Beauty, help me understand the deeper significance of this experience.

The Ministry of Beauty   by Chris Tiegren

“God is the author of truth, beauty, and love—a trinity of divine gifts that flow from His nature. For centuries, Christians have emphasized ministries of truth and love, focusing on doctrine and charity. These are the cornerstones of our faith—time-honored principles of Christian character and the key themes of many mission statements. We are called to demonstrate love, to present the truth, and, when we combine both well—“speak the truth in love,” as Paul wrote—we consider ourselves balanced.

Yet, far fewer Christians in recent centuries have emphasized a ministry of beauty. Despite the fact that many nonreligious people say they feel closer to God after experiencing an awe-inspiring view than at any other time, and despite the glimpses of transcendent beauty and glory we see in Scripture and the natural world, many believers today assume that truth and love are essential to God’s nature, while beauty is a luxury, even unnecessary. We’ve minimized its power.

In an age when hearts are hardened to the claims of truth and jaded to expressions of love, beauty may be one of the most effective ways to reflect the nature of God in this world. No, beauty doesn’t answer a seeker’s questions or provide warmth to the homeless on a cold night, but it captivates hearts and opens the door to the realization that truth and love are worth knowing. Beauty graces the rhythms and seasons of our lives, filling them with wonder and leading us toward God’s glory, often before we even realize who He is.

That’s powerful. Seek beauty wherever you can. Preserve it whenever possible. Create it however you can. Because, as one made in the image of the Creator, your creativity is a compelling statement of who He is. Your love for beauty reflects His nature and honors His artistry. And in a world often full of ugliness, that matters more than you can imagine.”

What a fun charge- to seek beauty wherever you can-- go for it!  And stay amazed at the awe and wonder of our creative God.
